The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate remained relatively stable at 5.5% in June 2016 compared to 5.2% in May 2016.
Ephaim Kwesigabo, the NBS’ Director of Population, Census and Social Statistics, clarified that the increase in inflation was caused by rising food prices.
On its side, food inflation was attributed to rising prices of staples such as maize, cassava flour, fish, yogurt, garlic, potatoes, and bananas.
Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate recorded in June 2016 increased to 8.1% from 7.0% recorded in May 2016.
The Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home increased to 8.3% in June 2016 from 7.2% recorded in May 2016.
However, the 12 month index change for non food products decreased to 3.6% in June 2016 from 3.8% in May 2016.
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy stood at 3.0% in June 2016 as it was recorded in May 2016.
The purchasing power of 100 Tanzanian Shillings reached TZS96 and 65 cents in June 2016 from December, 2015. It was TZS97 and 09 cents in May 2016.
After a peak of 6.8% in December 2015, inflation in Tanzania has been steadily decreasing reaching 5.1% in April 2016.
