Tanzania Annual Inflation Slow Down to 3.6% in August 2019

TANZANIA INFLATION AUGUST 2019

The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate for August 2019 has decreased to 3.6% from 3.7% recorded in July 2019.

The overall index went up to 116.01 in August 2019 from 112.01 recorded in August 2018, which is equivalent to an increase of 3.6%. However, the speed of price change in August 2019 is lower than that recorded in July 2019.

Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of August 2019 has increased to 3.7% from 2.9% recorded in July,2019.

Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home for the month of August 2019 has slightly increased to 5.0% from 4.9% recorded in July 2019.

On the other hand, the 12 month index change for non-food products in August 2019 has decreased to 3.5% from 4.2% recorded in July 2019.

Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of August 2019 has slightly decreased to 2.9% from 3.1% recorded in July 2019.

Monthly Headline Inflation Rate
The Consumer Price Index from July, 2019 to August 2019 has decreased by 0.5% compared to a decrease by 0.4% recorded from June 2019 to July 2019.

The overall index has decreased to 116.01 in August 2019 from 116.61 recorded in July 2019.

The decrease of the overall index is attributed to the price decrease for food and non-food items.

Some food items that contributed to such a decrease include: sardines by 1.0%; fruits by 3.7%; vegetables by 2.9%; Lentils by 4.1%; potatoes by 6.2% and cooking bananas by 4.0%.

On the other hand, non-food items that contributed to the decrease include; charcoal by 1.1%; diesel by 4.2% and petrol by 6.1%.
