Tanzania Annual Inflation Increase to 3.5% in May 2019

TANZANIA INFLATION MAY 2019

The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate for May 2019 has increased to 3.5% from 3.2% recorded in April 2019. 

The overall index went up to 117.23 in May 2019 from 113.24 recorded in May 2018.

Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the month of May 2019 has increased to 2.2% from 0.9% recorded in April 2019.

Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home for the month of May 2019 has increased to 3.9% from 2.7% recorded in April 2019.

On the other hand, the 12-month index change for non-food products in May 2019 has decreased to 4.7% from 5.3% recorded in April 2019.

Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of May 2019 has slightly decreased to 3.5% from 3.6% recorded in April 2019.

Monthly Headline Inflation Rate
The Consumer Price Index from April 2019 to May 2019 has increased by 0.4% compared to an increase of 0.5% recorded from March 2019 to April 2019.

The overall index has increased to 117.23 in May 2019 from 116.82 recorded in April 2019. The increase in the overall index is attributed to the price increase for both food and non-food items.

Some food items that contributed to such an increase include; maize flour by 1.9%, vegetables by 1.5%, beans by 2.3%, potatoes by 8.4% and fresh cassava by 8.2%.

On the other hand, non-food items that contributed to such an increase include; refrigerators by 3.5%, kitchen and domestic utensils by 2.5%, petrol by 3.9% and maintenance and repairs of vehicles by 2.9%.
