The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) indicates that the Annual Headline Inflation Rate decreased to 5.4% in June 2017 from 6.1% recorded in May 2017.
The NBS explains that the speed of price increase for commodities in the year ending speed of price change for commodities in the year ending June 2017 has decreased as compared to the speed of price change recorded in May 2017.
The overall index went up to 109.10 in June 2017 from 103.47 recorded in June 2016.
Food and Non-Food Inflation Rates
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for June 2017 has decreased to 9.6% from 11.6% recorded in May 2017.
The Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home has decreased to 9.8% in June 2017 from 11.8% recorded in May 2017.
In addition, the 12-month index change for non-food products has increased to 3.1% in June 2017 from 3.0% recorded in May 2017.
Inflation Rate Excluding Food and Energy
The Annual Inflation Rate which excludes food and energy for the month of June, 2017 has decreased to 1.9% from 2.2% recorded in May, 2017.
Monthly Headline Inflation Rate

The decrease of the overall index is mainly attributed to the price decrease of some food items.
Some food items that contributed to such a decrease include: maize grains by 5.1%, maize flour by 2.4%, cassava flour by 1.9%, oranges by 2.4%, sardines by 3.2%, vegetables by 5.7%, beans by 1.8% and round potatoes by 6.2%.
Purchasing Power
The purchasing power of 100 Tanzanian Shillings has slightly gained to TZS 91 and 66 cents in June 2017 compared to TZS 91 and 53 cents in May 2017.
